According to policy, students going into their third or fourth year are to be given priority consideration for Academic Student Employee (ASE) positions. Exceptions are only made if needed. Unit status (junior, senior, etc.) is not considered for meeting this requirement.
For Front Desk Assistant positions, students in any year are considered. Many who are hoping to be hired as a tutor later in their UCSB career apply to be Front Desk Assistants while completing their lower-division courses.
All students can apply to be tutors, but priority consideration will go to applicants who have taken at least two quarters of UCSB courses.
Students who will be abroad for part of the year are still eligible to be hired as tutors while they are still physically attending UCSB. The timing of the study abroad program will be factored into the decision to hire due to the logistics of staffing, but it does not automatically disqualify an applicant.
Yes! You can use the checkboxes on the application to indicate all positions for which you would like to apply. If you are applying for multiple tutoring positions, please make sure to include all courses for which you feel qualified to tutor as well as all required application materials for each position. Students are generally hired for one tutor position at a time.
Please note that the Front Desk Assistant position requires a separate application.
We do hire language tutors who are native speakers of the language they would like to tutor; however, language tutor applications require a letter of recommendation from a UCSB instructor of that language. We recommend that potential applicants get to know faculty in the language department before requesting a letter of recommendation.
Most CLAS programs hire a limited number of tutors to work during Summer Sessions. Tutors who work during summer must be enrolled in at least one summer course during the session(s) they want to tutor.
Letters of recommendation can come from UCSB instructors, UCSB TAs, or previous supervisors. We do not recommend asking a teacher or mentor from high school to provide your recommendation.
For language tutors, a letter of recommendation from a UCSB instructor or someone who can speak to your language acquisition skills is preferred.
Letters of recommendation are submitted through our Recommendation Form and will be received directly by CLAS staff. Tutor applicants can send the link to the form to the person providing the recommendation.
Email contact information is provided on the Recommendation Form if the person providing the recommendation would rather email the Coordinator of the program.
The priority deadline changes each year and usually falls around the end of Week 4 of Spring Quarter. We accept applications all year round, and applications submitted before the priority deadline will be given priority consideration when hiring for the next academic year.
Most CLAS hiring processes for student positions are completed during Spring Quarter every year. Any applications received while CLAS is not actively filling positions will be kept of file in the event that a mid-year hire is required.
CLAS accepts applications at all times during the year. While the majority of our tutor hiring is completed in Spring Quarter, we sometimes have mid-year tutor positions open up, at which time we will review our application pools. Students are encouraged to submit applications at any time, even if the priority deadline has passed, though these applications may not receive priority consideration.
Prior experience, including volunteer and informal experience, for any CLAS student position is appreciated but not necessary.
An academic writing sample is simply a piece of writing of an academic (nonfiction) nature. A thesis-driven paper is an excellent choice to represent your university-level writing skills. Most applicants submit a piece of writing that they previously submitted for a UCSB course. There are no further requirements for this submission in terms of length or format.
Yes, all CLAS student positions include paid training sessions. The most important initial training takes place during Week 0 (Week of Welcome) in Fall Quarter, and each program also conducts ongoing training opportunities.
CLAS student staff (both tutors and front desk assistants) should anticipate working 8-10 hours per week. The actual number of hours may range between programs and staffing needs.
CLAS Tutors currently are paid a base rate of $21.28/hr.
CLAS Front Desk Assistants currently are paid a base rate of $16/hr.
No. CLAS tutors are hired as Academic Student Employees, which by definition are full-time students.
